Northern Harrier
Size - 17 to 24 inches long Habitat - Fields, marshes, and grasslands. Nesting - The nest is a platform of weeds, leaves, and plant stems on the ground or in a shrub. Eggs - 3 to 9, pale blue rarely spotted with brown. Incubation 32 days, by the female. Young leave the nest 5 weeks after hatching. Food - Voles; also other small rodents, frogs, reptiles, insects, and small birds. |
Common Loon
Size - 28 to 36 inches long. Habitat - Oceans, bays, tidal channels, and lakes; nests on northern lakes. Nesting - The nest is in a muddy depression or mound of plants or mud at shore of lake. Eggs - 1 to 3, olive or brown with dark spots. Incubation 29 days, by both the male and female. Young leave the nest soon after hatching; fly at 12 weeks. Food - Insects, fish, frogs, and crustaceans. |

American Kestrel
Size - 9 to 10 inches long. Habitat - Open country, farmland, deserts, towns, and cities. Nesting - The eggs are laid in a woodpecker hole or crevice of a building. Eggs - 3 to 7, white or pinkish, heavily blotched with brown. Incubation 29 to 30 days, by both sexes. Young leave the nest about 30 days after hatching. Food - Mainly insects in the summer; mainly small birds and mammals in the winter. |
Cedar Waxwing
Size - 6 1/2 to 8 inches long. Habitat - Open woodlands, orchards, gardens, parks, and shade trees. Nesting - The nest is a bulky cup of twigs, stems, and grass. Eggs - 3 to 6, pale blue or grayish dotted with black. Incubation 12 to 14 days, by female only. Young leave the nest about 18 days after hatching. Food - Berries, flower petals, and insects. |
